Teen Series: (Part 7 of 15) Glow Up: Essential Personal Hygiene for Every Teenager

As I help my teenager prepare to embrace independence and venture into the world, mastering the art of personal hygiene is a fundamental life skill that will greatly boost their confidence and well-being. It may seem like second nature to us as well-seasoned (speaking for myself :)) adults to do this stuff, but from the womb to the wild, they’ve got to learn this somewhere. Make sure it’s from you and not TikTok. 🙂

From dental care to skincare and overall body cleanliness, understanding how to maintain good hygiene is essential for a healthy and self-assured lifestyle. In this blog post, we’ll explore some basic personal hygiene tips every teenager should know before leaving the home, ensuring they radiate confidence and leave a lasting positive impression wherever they go – instead of cartoon stink lines.

1.

Smile Bright: Proper Brushing and Flossing Techniques

A radiant smile is one of the most captivating features anyone can possess. Teach your teen the importance of proper brushing and flossing techniques for optimal dental hygiene. Show them how to brush their teeth gently, using fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Demonstrate the correct motion for brushing all surfaces of their teeth, including the gum line. Encourage them to floss daily to remove plaque and debris between teeth, preventing cavities and gum disease. By smiling bright with healthy teeth, they’ll leave a positive impression on others and boost their self-confidence.

Once again, this may seem second nature to us as adults, and maybe they learned some of it along the way as you took them to their first dental exam, or they learned what all the instruments were called in an episode of Dora, but they have to understand the importance of maintaining this on their own as adults. Embarrassing to admit now, but I wasn’t taught this stuff as a kid, as my parents were refugees and dental care was at the bottom of their child-rearing totem pole. I’m still dealing with some consequences of lack of dental care, so this one sits high at on my priorities for my kiddos. I don’t want them to experience the things I did in trying to reverse some of the preventable damage. Of course, some of it was also hereditary and unavoidable, but teaching them the basics and importance of preventative dental care is super important!

2.

Skincare Savvy: Nourish Your Skin

In helping them take care of their bodies, don’t forget the largest organ! Taking care of their skin is an essential part of personal hygiene. Teach your teenager the importance of a daily skincare routine. Show them how to cleanse their face with a gentle cleanser, removing dirt and excess oil without stripping the skin’s natural moisture.

Thanks to an old Neutrogena commercial from the 90s, I will always have it engrained in my mind that washing your face should involve splashing water all over the bathroom mirror and floor (my 90s babes know what commercial I’m talking about!) Ha. Especially in the hot Texas sun, encourage them to apply sunscreen daily to protect their skin from harmful UV rays. Discuss the significance of moisturizing, especially during dry weather. Teach them to identify their skin type and choose skincare products accordingly. I grew up with dry skin and learned early on to moisturize after every shower. My brother figured out he had oily skin, and learned a routine that worked for him. By practicing good skincare, they’ll maintain a healthy complexion and nurture their self-esteem.

Embrace Cleanliness: Bathing and Grooming

Personal cleanliness goes beyond dental and skincare. Way beyond! Encourage your teen to adopt a regular bathing routine, showering or bathing daily to stay fresh and clean. I know there’s a thing with girls where washing your hair daily is bad for it, but I like to take what I call “body showers.” Especially for your teens, demonstrate to them that even those quick 5-minute body showers will do wonders in their cleanliness routines. (cough) Boys. (cough)

Teach them the importance of washing their hair regularly and using appropriate hair care products. Show them how to use deodorant to manage body odor effectively. Discuss the significance of grooming, such as trimming nails, combing hair, and maintaining good personal presentation. By embracing cleanliness, they’ll feel more comfortable in their own skin and exude confidence in social settings. Essentially, don’t set your teen up for failure when it comes to something as simple to us as washing our only God-given bodies! Keep it clean!

4.

Dress to Impress: Clean Clothes, Fresh Appeal

Properly managing their wardrobe is another aspect of personal hygiene. Teach your teenager the importance of wearing clean clothes and changing underwear daily. Show them the basics like –

  • how to do laundry, including sorting clothes and using the correct detergents and settings
  • keeping their shoes clean and odor-free
  • dressing appropriately for different occasions
  • presenting themselves well in public settings

By dressing to impress, they’ll feel more self-assured and make a positive impact on others. A teen at a job interview with a wrinkled and stained t-shirt doesn’t look as polished as a teen with a nice, clean, pressed shirt and tie. Teach them the basics to succeed.

5.

Hygiene Habits On-The-Go

Lastly, remind your teenager to maintain good personal hygiene habits even when they’re away from home. Duh. Encourage them to carry travel-sized dental care products, hand sanitizers, and personal wipes for quick clean-ups while on the go. Teach them the importance of washing their hands frequently, especially before eating or after using public facilities. By practicing good hygiene habits wherever they are, they’ll demonstrate responsibility and respect for themselves and others.

I know it seems like I’m making a big deal out of nothing, but a clean appearance is much more than looking attractive. It’s teaching your child the basics of living a clean lifestyle, and taking care of the body they were given. Download this infographic.

Empowering your teenager with basic personal hygiene knowledge is a gift that will benefit them throughout their lives. From dental care to skincare, overall body cleanliness, and dressing to impress, they’ll be well-equipped to embrace independence with confidence and self-assurance. With these essential hygiene habits, they’ll walk into the world with poise and grace, ready to shine bright and make a positive impact on those around them.
